2025 Wall Calendar - Wanrong, the Last Empress of China

$35.88 AUD

Wanrong was the last Empress of China, born in 1906. These products are for the tragic empress in all of us—married off to a child emperor, exiled from the palace, betraying her country during wartime, and sinking into opium addiction. Her child was murdered by her husband, and she was kept under house arrest in chains. At various points, she tried to escape, but no help was ever forthcoming. Mentally unraveling, she was later imprisoned in the bitterly cold northeast of China, put on display like an animal in a zoo, and eventually abandoned to die, starved  and abandoned in her cell in 1946.  Her once-renowned beauty evaporated, leaving her with rotting teeth and skin.

A cautionary tale, but what’s the caution? Don’t marry an emperor? Don’t stay with a man who doesn’t care for you? Don’t betray your country or become an opium addict? Or maybe, just maybe, it’s this: don’t let fathers, husbands, or governments control the fate and freedom of women. Yeah, that’s probably more like it.
